Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the relationship between competitive orientation (both positive and negative) and performance in the Iraqi Premier Basketball League. A questionnaire developed by Mohammed Hassan Alawi (2020), consisting of 12 items, was used to assess the competitive orientation of players, based on Dorothy Harris' work. The study sample included 122 players from the Iraqi Premier Basketball League during the 2021-2022 season. The findings revealed that negative competitive orientation was more prevalent in the league, while positive competitive orientation was comparatively lower. The researcher recommended that coaches provide psychological support to foster a positive competitive orientation among players and help reduce anxiety related to league matches.
