Abstract
Self-confidence is considered one of the important psychological skills that often affect the performance and level of students, especially during their physical activities in physical education and sports classes. Although there are various factors and sources for developing this psychological skill, many researchers link it to the contributions of the teaching style used in educational curricula, which relies on the pedagogical approach of competencies, also known as competency-based teaching. This is done by emphasizing the achievement of goals and reaching competencies that may lead to either an increase or decrease in self-confidence. Main Objective of the Study: To identify the level of self-confidence using a competency-based approach among secondary school students in all three stages (first, second, and third years), male students. Main Hypothesis: There are statistically significant differences in the measurement of self-confidence skills between male students of the three stages (first, second, and third years) when practicing physical education and sports with the competency-based approach. Research Procedures: In this study, we followed a descriptive method using the survey approach. We applied the research scales after ensuring the scientific validity on a random sample of 150 male students (aged 15-18 years) who practice physical education and sports in two secondary schools in the Oran province, Algeria. Main Findings: There are statistically significant differences between male students practicing physical education and sports with the competency-based approach across the three stages (first, second, and third years). This is evident in the superiority of third-year students practicing physical education and sports with the competency-based approach over first- and second-year students in terms of self-confidence. Main Recommendations: Increased attention from researchers and teachers to the study of self-confidence and the importance of emphasizing that the more training on this psychological skill, the better the outcome. It is necessary for physical education teachers to develop and enhance self-confidence among secondary school students in a way that suits their age and level, considering it one of the factors of success in achieving the best sports and academic results.
