Abstract

The study included the introduction, the importance of the research, and the research problem, which was identified as the limited use of modern techniques such as deep breathing, herbal medicine, muscle relaxation, massage, and similar methods in addressing psychological anxiety in athletes. The objectives of the research were: (1) to identify the level of psychological anxiety by using selected physiological indicators (blood pressure and pulse rate) among Iraqi elite handball players, and (2) to develop and implement a mental calmness program incorporating the use of medicinal herbs to reduce anxiety levels among these athletes. The researcher employed the experimental method on a total sample of 72 players, excluding 20, and dividing the remaining 52 participants into two groups—experimental and control—each consisting of 26 players. The results indicated that the mental calmness program combined with herbal treatment had a positive impact on physiological variables such as blood pressure and pulse rate. Additionally, the program effectively reduced pre-competition anxiety. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended the implementation of this program, particularly the use of herbs, prior to participation in individual or team sports. Furthermore, it was suggested that similar studies be conducted using different types of herbal plants to explore their effects on the physical and psychological states of athletes.
