Abstract
The study consisted of five sections. The first section presented the introduction and significance of the research, highlighting the unique nature of the 4 × 100-meter relay event compared to other track and field activities, as it depends on a group of athletes rather than an individual. The research problem focused on the learning process involved in the baton exchange at maximum speed, emphasizing the need to identify the most effective teaching methods to enhance the learning and retention of baton passing skills among students in colleges of physical education. The study aimed to determine the best teaching method for instructing the 4 × 100-meter relay and ensuring long-term retention. The second section discussed relevant theoretical topics, including the prescriptive and interactive teaching methods, technical phases of the 4 × 100-meter relay, and previous similar studies. The third section outlined the research methodology and procedures, where the researcher used a descriptive survey method. The study sample consisted of 69 first-year students from the College of Physical Education at the University of Kufa during the academic year 2010–2011. Homogeneity was established among participants in terms of height, weight, and age. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted, including performance evaluations through expert analysis and tests to measure learning retention, with data processed using appropriate statistical methods. In the fourth section, results were presented and analyzed in tables, leading to several conclusions in the fifth section. These included: (1) both the prescriptive and interactive methods had a positive effect on learning the 4 × 100-meter relay event, and (2) the interactive method proved more effective in ensuring long-term retention of learning. The study concluded with recommendations, such as emphasizing the use of varied teaching methods in the learning process and considering students’ preferences and tendencies, as doing so is the most efficient way to achieve successful learning outcomes.
