Abstract

The value of a timeout, as a period not counted as official game time, such as the four periods and extra time, is significant when used effectively during the game. The importance of this issue lies in the improper use of timeouts, and the challenge of determining when a coach should request a timeout and how to utilize this time strategically to achieve favorable outcomes. Additionally, there is a lack of an observation system, which the researcher believes would provide an accurate reflection of the coach's success in managing the game during a timeout. The goals of the research are to examine the number of timeouts used by top teams in Iraq (first and second stages) and to create a special inventory that assesses the real impact (positive and negative) of requesting a timeout on basketball play. The research hypothesis suggests that timeouts have a positive impact on play, especially in the second stage. The researcher used a descriptive method with a survey style, selecting 9 teams from a pool of 23 teams in the 2009 excellent degree qualifiers. An inventory was developed to evaluate the effect of timeouts on play. Several conclusions were drawn, including that timeouts were not properly utilized by coaches in both stages of the excellent league, with 248 out of 621 instances being unproductive. Moreover, there was a negative effect on basketball play during the second stage held in Baghdad. The study also revealed the absence of continuous evaluation of the effect of timeouts on play due to the lack of an observation sheet for coaches.
