Abstract
Psychological alienation and its relationship to the mental health of students in the internal departments of the Colleges of Physical Education in Iraq is a significant issue, particularly among students who experience instability, anxiety, and a sense of loss. This is especially evident among Iraqi students who attend universities outside their home provinces under difficult and stressful conditions, particularly following the events of April 9, 2003. These events had wide-ranging social, political, and economic impacts that negatively influenced the behavior of Iraqi society in general and university students in particular, resulting in psychological distress such as fear, anxiety, confusion, and reduced social interaction. Students living in internal departments are often far from their families, friends, and familiar communities, which can lead to a state of alienation and emotional instability. The study aimed to identify the relationship between psychological alienation and mental health among first-year students living in internal departments within the Colleges of Physical Education in Iraq. A descriptive relational survey method was used, and the sample consisted of 38 students, representing 18.26% of the research population. Both a psychological alienation scale and a mental health scale were used. After collecting and analyzing the data, the results showed that students in internal departments do experience psychological alienation, yet they maintain a level of psychological health. Moreover, a correlation was found between psychological alienation and mental health. Based on these findings, the researchers recommended improving the conditions of internal departments and providing necessary support to help students feel a sense of belonging and stability, reduce their feelings of alienation, and address their problems both in their living environments and academic settings.
