Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the impact of meaningful learning on acquiring certain swimming styles (backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) among students of the College of Basic Education. The researcher employed the experimental method using the design of two equivalent groups with pre- and post-tests on a sample of students from the Physical Education Department at the College of Basic Education / Al-Mustansiriyah University for the academic year 2012–2013. The sample consisted of 64 students who were homogenized based on certain anthropometric variables relevant to the tests under study. They were then divided into a control group and an experimental group. Specific performance tests were selected for the targeted Olympic swimming styles (backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle). After applying the meaningful learning method to the experimental group, the results were statistically analyzed and presented through charts and statistical tables. The researcher concluded that there was a clear improvement in learning these swimming styles among the students who were taught using the meaningful learning approach, and they outperformed those who learned through the traditional method used in physical education classes at the college.
