The effect of a recreational program with small games on the adaptive behavior of children with mental disabilities in Baghdad

Abstract

The problem of the research was summarized in the lack of attention to the psychological aspect in the Special Olympics, and the effort and attention is focused towards specialized sports to reach achievement, which prompted the researcher to develop a recreational program aimed at developing adaptive behavior skills and adaptive behavior in general for individuals with mental disabilities in the Iraqi Special Olympics, and the study aimed  To develop a recreational program with small games for people with mental disabilities in the Iraqi Special Olympics, and then know the impact of this recreational program on the social interaction of the research sample members.

       The research sample was represented by (21) children with mental disabilities and they were homogenized according to the torsion coefficient according to the research variables. The recreational program with small games was applied for a period of 8 weeks at a rate of one training unit per week.

      The applied recreational program was characterized by a variety of exercises in the form of small games and various, colorful and interesting tools such as games, sweets and dolls. The two researchers used the principle of reward by distributing games, gifts, sweets and expressions of praise. As for punishment, it was by depriving the mentally disabled player from participating in the game for a few seconds.

        The two researchers reached several conclusions, the most important of which was the development of all research variables among the members of the research sample, and based on the conclusions, the researchers recommended several recommendations, the most important of which was the need to use recreational programs with small games in developing adaptive behavior skills and adaptive behavior in general for people with mental disabilities of various categories.
